How to apply for a small grant

We’ve provided some information below to guide you through the application process. We hope you find it helpful, however, if you need further guidance, please email us using the address given on the application form which you can find at the top of this page.

1

Funding is subject to you agreeing to provide feedback

Feedback is important to us. We want to know how a project proceeded and your success adds to the success of the Pentland Community Chest scheme. We provide a short feedback form for you to complete once your project is finished and we ask that you submit this with some photos that can be used in our publicity. Guidance on what we require is given in the form. If you’re happy with this approach read on.

Please note that if your organisation has received a grant in the past, we must receive feedback before you make another application. Subsequent applications cannot be considered if this is outstanding. Please contact us if you are in any doubt.

2

Check the eligibility of your organisation

Organisation eligibility is two-fold, and depends on organisation type and location:

  • The scheme is only open to voluntary/non-profit-making organisations and community initiatives (e.g. sports clubs, social clubs or school activity groups).
  • Organisations must be based in the catchment areas of Balerno High School and Currie High School (see map), although on rare occasions this can be changed at the discretion of the trustees.
3

Check the eligibility of your project

Project criteria are set out below.

  • Projects to be funded must be new, clearly defined and separate from operational or running costs and may not be projects already being undertaken.
  • Grants will be between £100 and £600 in value and will generally favour small projects where the amount will make a significant impact on the applicant organisation.
  • Projects must demonstrate benefit to the local community.
  • Projects must not be for things that are funded by statute.
  • Some or all of the following criteria should be met:
    • Improvement to quality of life for local people
    • Involvement of a section of the local community
    • Sustainability (duration/permanence) of benefits
    • Additional social, economic or environmental benefits
    • Benefits to the amenity of the area
  • Preference will be given to applications that deliver maximum community benefit.
4

Check the submission date for the application

Dependent on funding there will be potentially two funding rounds per year. Applications in the current year should be
received by:

  • 31 May with decisions notified by 31 July
  • 30 November with decisions notified by 31 January
