The 42nd Pentland (Currie) Scout Group is a local scout group that takes Scouts on adventurous activities outdoors and teach them new skills indoors. They run weekly meetings and attend / run camps several times a year. The group helps Scouts to attain badges, fostering a sense of self-worth with the ultimate aim being the Chief Scouts Gold award.
Information about the project:
The 42nd Pentland (Currie) Scout Group wanted to be able to offer Scouts hammock camping as an overnight experience. To do this they needed some hammocks, tarps (to keep the rain off) and other assorted accessories to ensure comfort and safety. Their intention was to create and experience that would form part of the expedition challenge award and would be an amazing thing for Scouts to do – none of the Scouts had experienced hammock camping before.
Feedback:
At the time of feedback the Scout Group had used the equipment to run an evening activity where Scouts learned how to put up a hammock, cover it with a tarp and light a fire before trying a hammock, some for the very first time.
The Scouts were then offered an overnight expedition in the Pentlands where they survived by erecting their shelter and hammock, cooking a meal and sleeping out for the night. This was really successful and the Scout Group is planning another expedition.
In addition, Scouts have been offered the option of sleeping in hammocks for the Groups recent Great Tommy Sleepout charity fundraiser. They built tripods from poles and ropes to support the hammocks and had a great time overnight.
