Information about Pentland District Scouts:
The purpose of Scouting is to contribute to the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potentials, as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities. Pentland District Scouts includes groups for 4-18 year olds from Balerno, Currie, Juniper Green, Ratho and Colinton.
Information about the project:
Pentjam is a large District event that happens every 3 years and includes children aged 4-18. The first time Pentland District put on this event in 2023, there were 650 participants, but at the time of the application, interest in the 2026 even suggested up to 800 individuals might participate.
Because of this, Pentland District needed to buy additional coloured bibs for the event to cover the extra participants and replace older bibs that had worn out. The organisation was also looking to purchase lanyards which would be used by the young people to carry their personalised time table/list of activities. These lanyards would then be used at subsequent camps.
Feedback:
Pentjam went ahead in May 2026 as planned, with 716 young people and adults from across the District taking part over the weekend.
The grant enabled Pentland District to have sufficient coloured bibs in each of seven sub-camp colours to help supervising adults and participants easily identify which group they belonged to.
The lanyards replaced name badges and enabled individual timetables to be carried by participants. They also provided an easy colour coding system for identifying photo and access permissions.
These items are now in storage and available for use by all groups across the district for future events.
