Information about Ravelrig Riding for the Disabled:
Ravelrig Riding for the Disabled (RDA) supports people with physical, learning and sensory disabilities, as well as autism and multi-disabilities. The physical therapy delivered by their activities improves fitness, muscle strength, balance and coordination, benefiting core strength and mobility.
RDA provides 12 riding lessons per week, each lesson lasts 45 minutes and has 6 participants of varying abilities. Some lessons are themed or seasonal for extra fun! In addition, RDA organises riding experiences in the local area e.g. beach rides, woodland walks and visiting other RDA groups. The group participates in RDA competitions at a local and national level which include riding and some classroom based activity e.g. arts and crafts.
The organisation also offers non riding activities including stable management, grooming, and horse care.
Information about the project:
Ravelrig Riding for the Disabled requested funding to replace a saddle that had become worn and was close to being unusable.
Feedback:
The saddle was fitted to Thumper (the white horse on the right of the picture) by RDS’s trained saddle fitter. The benefit to Thumper was immediate, but there has also been benefit to participant riders who are finding the seat comfortable and supportive. From a safety point of view having such a good fitting saddle is vital.
Application Tranche: 2025-A
