The Colinton Tunnel – Purchase of materials, hire of scaffolding and artists fees for upgrade work in tunnel

Information about The Colinton Tunnel:

The Colinton Tunnel [group] has created Scotland’s largest heritage mural inside the Colinton Tunnel and on a large wall at the Slateford end. The group continues to curate and maintain the mural.

The mural was created to revitalise the local economy and it has trebled the footfall on this section of the Water of Leith Walkway. The mural has also eliminated antisocial and offensive graffiti, protects against new graffiti and, arguably most importantly, has enhanced community safety. It is very much a community asset.

Information about the project:

This element of the group’s ongoing refreshment, maintenance and revitalisation work of the mural was specifically to replace the weather-damaged blue train on the abutment wall at the Slateford end of Colinton tunnel. This work is part of the wider, ongoing work that the group carries out to keep the mural bright, fresh and cared-for; which is a major element in protecting the whole mural from the attention of casual graffitists and keeping it a place where people feel safe.

Feedback:

At the time of reporting, creation of the replacement images was largely complete. The Pentland Community Chest grant was used to purchase materials, with a small contribution towards the hire of a cherry picker to aid installation of the mural. The artwork was due to be finished towards the end of 2025 with installation taking place as soon as possible thereafter, subject to weather and access.
