Information about Wildfire Explorer Unit:
Wildfire Explorer Unit is part of the Scout Association with members in the 14 to 17 year old age range. The unit is based in Balerno and offers a varied programme including adventurous and reflective activities that challenge teenagers to think about themselves and their role in community life.
Information about the project:
Wildfire requested funding to buy a new canoe, one of a fleet of boats they were aiming to build for use by Wildfire Explorer Unit and which would be used to provide water experiences to other younger sections in Scouting. After receiving funding, Wildfire contacted Pentland Community Chest to request that instead of purchasing a canoe, the funding could be put towards the purchase of two paddleboards for the Unit.
Feedback:
Pentland Community Council agreed the change in use of the funding and the paddle boards were duly bought. They provide a third type of craft for members to use in addition to the fleet of kayaks and canoes, and have been used regularly since their purchase – you may have seen them out on Threipmuir Reservoir on a summer evening. They are available for other Scout sections to borrow and Scout leaders have even been spotted trying them out on occasions as well.
