Information about Wildfire Explorer Unit:
Wildfire Explorer Unit is part of the Scout Association with members in the 14 to 17 year old age range. The unit is based in Balerno and offers a varied programme including adventurous and reflective activities that challenge teenagers to think about themselves and their role in community life.
Information about the project:
Wildfire requested funding to purchase six new frying pans for cooking over open fires at camp. The frying pans used by Wildfire were nearly all over 40 years old and were in various stages of repair. Most were also too small (34cm) for efficient patrol use, 45cm diameter pans being more appropriate.
Wildfire indicated that the pans needed to be rugged, simple construction, and of commercial size. Non-stick pans are not suitable, and cast iron and stainless steel pans are too heavy at this size, therefore a traditional 3mm aluminium pan was preferred.
Feedback:
Finding stock of the pans was difficult but they were eventually sourced at a slightly more reasonable cost than originally anticipated via the German amazon website.
The first pan was taken to Blair Atholl International Jamboree and was the envy of many patrols, and the first choice for leaders to borrow. It was particularly beneficial when dinner was burritos and the patrol had 2kg of mince to cook for themselves and an American guest patrol.
All the pans were used at Wildfire’s summer camp, six days down in Selkirk, where twenty five Explorers were split into four patrols. This time the pans were used on Wildfire’s own altar fires and quickly became the main pan of choice for breakfast and dinner.
With residual funds Wildfire purchased gloves, tape, and cool boxes and some replacement scissors for the patrol kitchen boxes. They also purchase some red chopping boards for use with meat.
