Information about National Trust for Scotland Malleny Garden:
National Trust for Scotland (NTS) seeks to protect, care for, share and speak up for Scotland’s Heritage nationwide. Specifically at Malleny Garden, NTS aims to protect the old walled garden and designed woodland in what is considered, in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes, to have a Horticultural level of interest classed as Outstanding. The quiet, peaceful environment of the garden is open to visitors, from the local area and further afield, as a retreat from a busy world. The wellbeing benefits of gardens are becoming ever more important. The NTS aims to preserve and improve the garden in keeping with its historical context and as resources allow. Maintaining a National Collection of 19th Century shrub roses along with four 400 year old yew trees is an important part of the NTS’s work. Improving accessibility to visitors is also important to sharing the garden.
Information about the project:
NTS requested funding to purchase a Sheffield style bicycle stand and rack suitable for the location at Malleny Garden and the expected bicycle users. This would replace a temporary basic stand which was unsuitable for the location and unsuitable for bike users and their bikes. It was proposed to surround the bike rack by a silver grey granite gravel – the historically accurate gravel for Malleny. The rack would be securely fixed into a foundation in the ground to prevent it being tampered with. As a conservation charity, the NTS aims to promote methods of travel which minimise the impact on the environment and cycling is an important part of of this strategy which the NTS wishes to encourage.
Feedback:
The bike rack has been installed next to the main entrance gate to Malleny Garden. New timber framing has also been installed to frame the bike rack and give clearly defined edges. The framing clearly marks out the area to be used for bike parking. New gravel finishes the base of the facility. The new rack will accommodate a range of bicycle types from gravel bikes to e-bikes and the increasingly popular cargo bikes. The NTS hopes that it will be well used and will encourage people to choose to cycle when they next visit Malleny Garden. A discreet plaque has been installed to credit the Pentland Community Chest for the gift of funds to install the rack.
